Why Rajgir's crows disappear mysteriously during July-Aug 'malmas'

Bihar Sharif, Aug 6 (IANS) The Malmas fair is organised in Bihar's Rajgir district and is held once in every three years. Malmas is also known as Adhimas.

According to beliefs, during the month of Malmas 33 crore deities reside in Rajgir for a month.

During this time, even though all the Gods and Goddesses reside here, the crows seen in normal days leave the Rajgir area during this month.

Sudhir Upadhyay, the head of the Rajgir Teerth Panda Committee, said that in this one month all the 33 crore deities reside in Rajgir for a month except the black crows.

He said that according to ancient beliefs and mythology, a Yagya was organised by King Basu, the son of Lord Brahma, in the Brahma Kund complex of Rajgir, in which 33 crore deities were invited, but the invitation was not extended to the black crow.

As par the beliefs, this is the reason why black crows are not seen anywhere in Rajgir during this one month.

It is also believed that all the Gods and Goddesses had difficulty in taking bath in the same pool, then Brahma had to  build 22 kunds (pools) and 52 water streams in Rajgir.

Swami Chidatman Ji Maharaj a.k.a Falahari Baba of Simariya Ghat inaugurated the month-long Malmas Mela at Rajgir on July 18. This fair will run till August 15.

Swami Chidatman Ji Maharaj, who is staying in Rajgir for a month, explains that according to the Hindu calendar, every third year one month is added. This month is called Purushottam month. In Purushottam month, auspicious works are prohibited.

There are 22 kunds (pools) and 52 water streams in Rajgir, but bathing in Brahmakund and Saptadharas has special significance.

Devotees from all over the country and the world will take bath in the Malmas Mela.

During this, 'Shahi Snan' is organised on the lines of Kumbh, in which saints and sages from every corner of the country take a holy dip. It has a special significance in the fair.

'Shahi Snan' is the occasion when groups of saints and sages take bath in various pools.
