Nitish Mishra in race for Youth Icon

 

file photo-Bihar TimesPatna, (Bihar Times): Bihar’s minister for disaster management, Nitish Mishra, was till recently an angry man. He even threatened to quit the Nitish Kumar cabinet as, according to the media reports, he felt humiliated when he was made in-charge of the flood relief of just one district––Araria.

Two months later he has been identified as one of the most promising social entrepreneurs by the Digital Partners, Seattle, a venture capital firm funding technology companies, for his E-Swasthya Project in the Madhubani district of Bihar. If voted he would be the first Bihari to be selected as the youth icon.

Son of the former chief minister and dissident Janata Dal (United) leader, Dr Jagannath Mishra, his profile on the site, briefly outlines his claim to fame. After studying the Global Political Economy from the University of Hull, United Kingdom, he jumped into the state politics and soon find himself made the minister of state for sugarcane in the Nitish Kumar cabinet in November 2005. However, on April 13 this year he was shifted to the disaster management department.

The credit goes to him for introducing the best sugarcane policy in the state when he was the minister of state for sugarcane. Now as the minister of state for disaster management set up the flood management information system providing daily update. He also monitored relief and rescue operations from the front.

The Pepsi and MTV Youth Icon, which began in 2003, has short-listed 30 spirited individuals out of 800 entries. Last year the social networking site Orkut was voted as the winner for 2008. This year eight of the nominees would be selected as the Youth Icons of 2009 on the basis of on-line voting. Mahindra Singh Dhoni, Shahrukh Khan, Anil Ambani, Rahul Dravid are the Youth Icons of the past.
