Mayor of Hiroshima, Nagasaki to be presented portraits of Mahatma Gandhi

 

 

Patna,(BiharTimes): The mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be presented the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi at the 40th anniversary of the World Peace Pagoda atop Ratnagiri Hills at Rajgir on October 25.

The portraits were created by famous Buddhist artist Upendra Maharathi and would be displayed at the Peace Memorials in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.


The function which will be inaugurated by the chief minister Nitish Kumar is organized by Rajgir Buddha Vihar Society.

Atsuhiro Horiuchi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the CGC Companies, Japan, will be the guest of honour. The President of the CGC Company, Takao Morita, will also be the guest of honour. Designer Rajiv Sethi will be the distinguished guest.

Hundreds of delegates from India and abroad will attend the function. They include two groups of 60 industrialists from CGC Company of Japan, who are on CGC Pilgrimage Mission of India.

According to Dr Mahashweta Maharathi, the secretary of the Rajgir Buddha Vihar Society “we gather at the Pagoda to express our dedication to world peace. This time there will be pilgrims from various countries.”

The Peace Pagoda was constructed to propagate world peace and international brotherhood by the late Most Venerable Nichidastu Fuji Guruji, founder of the Nipponzan Myohoji, in 1969 at the initiation of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru. It was designed by Upendra Maharathi and was inaugurated by the then President, Dr V V Giri on October 25, 1969.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuked by the United States on August 6 and 9, 1945 respectively at the fag end of the World War-II, when Japan had already given enough signal to surrender. The US had twin purpose in targeting these two cities. It wanted to test the impact of the newly developed nuclear weapon and at the same time wanted to check the influence of the then Soviet Union in the eastern theatre after the War was over in Europe by May 10, 1945.
