Cabinet approves establishment of All India Institute of Ayurveda

New Delhi, Jan 24 : The union cabinet Thursday approved the setting up of an All India Institute of Ayurveda in the national capital.

After a cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said the institute would be an autonomous organisation under the Department of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy).

A director and supporting staff would be appointed soon "to oversee project implementation".

"The decision will facilitate scientific validation, quality control and standardisation and safety evaluation of Ayurveda products," Dasmunsi told reporters.

He said the institute would also help standardise "Ayurveda-based tertiary health delivery and promote interdisciplinary research and education of Ayurveda at postgraduate and postdoctoral levels".

Last year, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss had told IANS that the institute would be modelled after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

"The medical college will be set up in south Delhi near Indraprastha Apollo Hospital with an investment of Rs.1.5 billion. All kinds of research and referral activities in the field of herbal medicine will take place there," Ramadoss said.
